Eido Walny Shares Insights on Lasting Success in Legal Business Development on Be That Lawyer Podcast

In a recent podcast appearance on Be That Lawyer Live – Part 1, Eido Walny, founder and managing partner of Walny Legal Group LLC, joined a panel of legal professionals to discuss the business realities of building a successful law firm—emphasizing long-term strategy, rainmaking habits, and the evolving expectations for attorneys outside the courtroom.

Walny spoke candidly about the lack of formal business development training in legal education. “We are generally successful people who did well in college, did well in law school,” he explained. “But if you weren’t in a marketing role, how are you supposed to learn marketing?” He pointed out that many lawyers are simply told to work hard as associates and then suddenly expected to generate clients upon promotion—without any formal preparation.

During the conversation, Walny also shared the formative moment early in his career that reshaped his entire approach to law firm growth. He recalled a mentor telling him, “There are two things that no one can ever take away from you: your knowledge base and your contact base.” Since then, he’s focused on steadily building both—ultimately becoming, as he described it, “a hub of meeting people and connecting people.”

When asked what habits drive his ongoing success, Walny emphasized consistency, relationships, and the importance of staying top-of-mind. “I come in in the morning… while I’m having my coffee, that’s when I will blast out some emails, short emails, right, to a lot of my good contacts. How have you been? Happy birthday. Saw you in the news.” These touchpoints, he noted, are essential for maintaining warm relationships that lead to new opportunities.

He also stressed the value of informal networking, saying, “I try not to eat alone. If I’m going out for lunch, I’ll try to grab someone… and oftentimes, frankly, we won’t even be talking about business.”

Reflecting on a pivotal speaking opportunity earlier in his career, Walny explained how even a less-than-perfect experience can become a long-term asset. “It still resonates in my head 15 years later,” he said. “And now I’m known as a pretty good national speaker—and I attribute maybe that misstep to allowing me to do that.”

Throughout the podcast, Walny’s guidance revealed the philosophy behind Walny Legal Group’s approach: long-view strategic thinking, relationship-first business development, and mentoring others to do the same. His message to other attorneys was clear—true success in law today goes far beyond technical skill.

“You work with people you want to work with… To be that special person with a warm relationship with our referral sources and other contacts is the reason they come to us and not the next person.” — Eido Walny
